When did we first learn of the Balaclava, the Cardigan and the Raglan Sleeve

Did you know that these three items of clothing were the result of the Crimea War?

  • The Balaclava. The war was fought in a part of the world that in winter was cold! Very cold!!  Our troops, as usual, were unequipped for this harsh winter, but our soldiers, if nothing else, will find a way to keep warm.  From all sorts of clothing they made a knotted wool cap that covered their head and neck, its only opening was for the face. After the war it became fashionable and is now worn by many in cold climates.
  • The Cardigan. As we all know is a collarless sweater that buttons down the front. It was worn by Lord Cardigan and then taken up by the soldiers who wore it under their tunics because it was so cold. It became named after him. This was because he went down in history for the Charge of the Light Brigade. He charged his brigade of Light Cavalry down a ravine between two hills to attack a Russian position protected by 15,000 men, 4,000 cavalry and 10 cannons on either side of the Ravine! Unsurprisingly, they were cut to bits.
  • Raglan Sleeve comes from the Commander, Lord Raglan, who, while he was military secretary to the Duke of Wellington, lost an arm at the Battle of Waterloo. Due to this he had a cape like an overcoat with sleeves extending to the neck, instead of the shoulder.  This type of sleeve became fashionable and it is still used today on coats, sweaters and dresses.

Some war wasn’t it?

This is what makes history fun.
